Guidelines on Resolution Requirements
To match correctly your image size needs you can follow the guidelines below.
Let us assume that you know the physical dimension of the space that the image will fill (measure in inches or millimeters or old style measures ¼ page or ½ page). Then you have to know the best dpi parameter for your printing device: obviously not all printers are the same.
Roughly:
If the material is a HIGH QUALITY one, then your DPI needs are higher.
When the physical material is LARGE, DPI needs are low.
So if you know your quality material and your physical size (so you can know your DPI needs), you can calculate your image resolution multiplying your image dimensions by your DPI requirements.
EXAMPLE
You have to license an image for a catalog that is an A4 format (210x297 mm, about 8x12”).
Let’s assume that you need 200 dpi because of the paper material.
So you need 8x200=1600 and 12x200=2400 image pixel resolution.
Note that when you multiply you have to convert “mm” to “inches” because printer resolution refers to DPI (Dots per inches).
